Amy has choreographed over 70 dances.
Amy Ragsdale is the former Artistic Director of Headwaters Dance Co., a contemporary dance, repertory company that was based in Missoula, MT. In 2015, after 25 years of running dance companies she closed Headwaters, choosing to go freelance. In her choreography, she specializes in the use of spoken text as a sound score in combination with original music. Her dances frequently tackle social/political issues.
Ms. Ragsdale's performing career included Impulse Dance Co. in Boston and Fred Benjamin Dance Co., Laughing Stone, and Ze’eva Cohen and Dancers in New York, and performing as a guest performer with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co. and Douglas Dunn and Dancers. She moved to Montana where she became head of the Dance Program at The University of Montana for twelve years and was on the faculty for twenty. She has taught contemporary dance in Spain, Martinique, Indonesia, Mozambique and Brazil.
Her choreographic work has been performed throughout the West and in New York, and televised on Montana PBS, KSPS, and CNN’s World News. She is co-founder of Mo-Trans and founder of Headwaters Dance Co.;the recipient of the University of Montana’s Outstanding Faculty Award and the 2009 Governor’s Arts Award for the State of Montana. Her work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the PROP and Paul G. Allen Foundations and the Montana Cultural and Aesthetic Trust. Amy earned a B.A. in Art History from Harvard College and an M.A. in Movement Studies from Wesleyan.
